Clarence Peters: “I repeated my father’s mistakes”

Clarence Peters Opens Up on Forgiving His Father, Shina Peters, After Personal Reflection

Renowned Nigerian music video director Clarence Peters has shared a deeply personal revelation about his relationship with his father, legendary musician Shina Peters.

In a recent appearance on the Afropolitan podcast, Clarence revealed that he forgave his father long before they ever discussed their past. The turning point, he said, came when he realized he had repeated nearly every mistake his father once made.

According to the 41-year-old director, this moment of self-awareness in 2014/2015 marked his true transition into adulthood. He added that the only difference between his own missteps and his father’s was the era—modern times and technology softened the impact of his choices.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, Peters revealed that the turning point came when he recognized that he had unknowingly repeated every mistake his father once made. That moment of realization, he said, marked the true beginning of his journey into adulthood.

“I made every single mistake my father made,” Peters admitted. “The only reason mine didn’t end up as badly is because of the era I live in—time and technology softened the blow. Once I saw that clearly, I forgave him instantly, even without a conversation. That was around 2014 or 2015. That’s when I started becoming an adult. It’s a journey I’m still on.”

Clarence, the son of music icon Shina Peters and veteran Nollywood actress Clarion Chukwura, also reflected on his complex family history. In a previous interview, he revealed that his mother once considered terminating the pregnancy but changed her mind after becoming convinced he was the reincarnation of her late father, who passed away when she was just 11.

In a February 2025 conversation with Chude, Peters shared that while he once felt compelled to judge his father for how he treated his mother, he eventually realized it wasn’t his place to do so. He added, “I tried not to be like my father in how I relate with women… but I’m not perfect.”
