Darkoo: Women Drive the Music Scene
Darkoo Says Women Drive Music Trends, Cites Amapiano’s Popularity
British-Nigerian singer Darkoo has argued that women play a major role in shaping the popularity of music genres.
Speaking on the Comfortably Speaking podcast, the Favourite Girl hitmaker said many songs gain traction because women like them, often influencing men to adopt the same music preferences.
Darkoo pointed to the rise of South Africa’s Amapiano as an example, claiming it gained momentum after women began dancing to its beats on social media.
“The truth of the matter is, music — the world in general — is dictated by women,” Darkoo said. “A lot of the music you like is because women like it. Women got into Amapiano first when they were doing dance trends online. At first, people thought it was weird. But now, men are vibing with Amapiano too.”
She added that even the choice of songs men play in their cars is often influenced by women, stressing that female listeners and fans remain a driving force in global music culture.
