Bright Chimezie: Music has lost meaning”

Highlife legend, Bright Chimezie, has voiced concern over what he described as the declining lyrical depth in today’s music industry.

Speaking on a recent episode of the CreativTea podcast, the veteran singer acknowledged that the new generation of Nigerian artists are excelling in rhythm and sound but argued that many of their songs lack substance and lasting messages.

“Music is far more profitable now than it was in my time. The only challenge I see with today’s artists is their lyrical content. Rhythm-wise, they’re doing well, but what message are they passing to society?” Chimezie said.

He contrasted the current scene with his own era, recalling timeless works such as his 1984 hit Respect Africa. “Nearly 40 years later, I can still look back at that song and feel proud of the lyrics. That’s the difference. When these young artists sit with their children decades from now, will they be able to feel the same pride?” he asked.

Chimezie emphasized that while the younger crop of musicians are talented and innovative, they must place more value on storytelling and meaningful lyrics if they want their music to stand the test of time.

“They’re doing very well, but it’s important to add good lyrical content. That’s what makes music endure,” he concluded.
