Skales: From Hut Life to Stardom
Nigerian singer and songwriter Skales has shared emotional details of his difficult upbringing in Kaduna, revealing how he and his late mother once lived in a hut before his rise to stardom.
Speaking on A TownHall Different Podcast, the artist said his mother, a teacher, struggled to make ends meet. They often slept on mats laid directly on the floor before eventually moving into a boys’ quarters.
“My mum was a teacher, and we didn’t have much. We lived in a hut before moving to a BQ. We slept on the floor with mats, and my mom would spread a wrapper on the floor and sleep. Coming from that kind of background to where I am today is just crazy,” he recalled.
Skales also noted that he grew up without access to a television. His first personal encounter with one, he said, came only after signing with Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) label.

“The first time I saw TV was when EME signed me. I had my own TV in my room. I used to switch it on and off in amazement,” he joked.
Reflecting on his journey, the singer said his humble beginnings continue to inspire him and serve as a reminder of how far he has come.
