Johnny Drille: My Music Never Felt Right in Church
Nigerian singer and songwriter, Johnny Drille, has shared his thoughts on his relationship with the church and how his music transcends traditional Christian boundaries.
Speaking on a recent episode of the CreativiTEA Podcast, the Mavin Records artist explained that while his faith in God remains strong, he has never felt that his music fully fits within the structure of church ministry.
“I love God and I’m very much involved in church, but I never really felt my music was for church. Sometimes I get invited to perform in church, which is quite interesting,” he said.
Johnny Drille also addressed the criticism he occasionally receives from some members of the Christian community for performing in church settings.
He clarified that although his songs are not strictly gospel, they promote positivity and meaningful values.
“I’ve gotten some backlash from the Christian community whenever I perform in churches. But the truth is my music spreads positivity. It touches the issues the church tries to avoid,” he noted.
Known for his soulful love songs and heartfelt lyrics, Johnny Drille further argued that churches often shy away from conversations about love — a theme he considers both important and spiritual.

“The church shies away from talking about love. You go to Christian weddings, you hear Davido and Wizkid songs. What if the church decides that we want to start doing their own Christian love songs?” he added.
Johnny Drille’s comments have sparked conversations online about the intersection between faith, music, and modern culture, with many fans praising his honesty and unique musical approach.
