Shina Peters Admits Faking Madness for Public Sympathy
Veteran Afro-Juju icon Sir Shina Peters has shared the unusual public relations strategy that helped transform his image following the controversy surrounding his departure from Prince Adekunle’s band.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the “Ace” hitmaker recalled that his exit from the band sparked public outrage, with many accusing him of abandoning his mentor for financial gain.
According to Shina Peters, his record label and some media executives devised a plan to make him appear mentally unstable as a way to evoke public sympathy.
“People protested when I left Prince Adekunle’s band because they thought I betrayed a father figure for money,” he explained. “Then my record label boss and some media heads came up with an idea. They asked me to braid my hair for three days without loosening it, wear torn clothes, and go to Oyingbo Market to buy ewedu while they recorded everything. I didn’t even know what they were planning.”
He added that the performance continued in Badagry, where he was filmed behaving erratically at a Julius Berger construction site.
