DeeOne Calls Out Olu Maintain Over ‘Yahoo’ Legacy

Reality TV personality and comedian Aderombi Adedayo, popularly known as DeeOne, has alleged that veteran singer Olu Maintain contributed to Nigeria’s negative image abroad.

Speaking on the Echo Room podcast, DeeOne said the artist’s 2007 hit track Yahooze glamorized internet fraud and helped normalize “Yahoo Yahoo” culture in Nigeria.

“Before then, being a fraudster was shameful even if they made money. People hid it,” he explained. “But after Yahooze dropped, the whole country celebrated it. It even had a dance. Young people were inspired, and suddenly it became an accepted profession.”

The comedian argued that the ripple effect went beyond Nigeria, influencing global perceptions of Nigerians as scammers.

He added that while Olu Maintain often criticizes government policies, he believes the singer’s music also contributed to the hardships the country faces today.
