DJ Big N Declares Afrobeats at Its Lowest Level

Nigerian disc jockey, Nonso Temisan Ajufo, popularly known as DJ Big N, has expressed concern over the sharp decline in the performance of Afrobeats internationally, describing the genre’s current state as its lowest in 20 years.

Speaking in a recent interview with Echo Room, DJ Big N attributed the decline to both artists and music executives, noting that their decisions have diluted the sound in a bid to appeal to international audiences.

“Afrobeats right now is at its worst position in the last 20 years. And everyone from musicians to music executives have a part to be blamed. The quality of music dropped. You have to understand that the quality of the product is important in every way,” he said.

He explained that in trying to sound more international, artists and labels compromised the authenticity that originally made Afrobeats appealing.

DJ Big N further noted that many Afrobeats artists are now overcharging, which he believes is unsustainable. According to him, many Nigerian acts have become unaffordable, even within the local music scene.

He urged artists to re-evaluate their approach to ensure the genre’s survival and continued growth on the global stage.
