Erigga: Nigerians Favor Foreign Artists Over Local Talent
Nigerian rapper and singer Erigga has voiced his frustration with the tendency of some Nigerians to favor foreign entertainers while overlooking homegrown talent.
In an interview with Yanga FM, the Warri-born artist commented on the recent relocation of the Headies Awards to the United States, describing it as part of a broader issue where international recognition is often valued more than local achievements.
“Nigerians have this attitude when it comes to our own; we don’t regard our own. The average Nigerian prefers to show you 300 people dancing in London than 5,000 attending a concert here in Nigeria,” Erigga said.
He added that music should be celebrated universally and that local talent deserves recognition just as much as international stars.

“Sometimes people say, ‘Erigga, do one English rap for me,’ and I’m like, am I an English professor? I’m educating the people I meet on the streets,” he explained, highlighting the disconnect between local artists and audience expectations.
