Erigga Says Tech Gurus, Influencers Hurting Nigerian Music
Nigerian rapper Erigga has attributed the decline in the quality of Nigerian music to the growing influence of tech entrepreneurs and social media influencers in the entertainment industry.
Speaking in a recent interview, the Paper Boi crooner argued that the music scene began to lose depth and originality when tech gurus replaced traditional A&R (Artists and Repertoire) experts, who were once responsible for discovering and nurturing real talent.
“Everything began to spoil when the tech bros entered music and replaced actual A&Rs who knew talents and how to groom them,” Erigga said.
He explained that most tech-inclined investors are more focused on trends and numbers rather than musical artistry or long-term talent development.

“Tech guys don’t care about the music; what they care about are numbers and the metrics to get those numbers. They can’t really scout talent—they only scout momentum. When the momentum drops, they move to the next person. People no longer chase talent anymore, but numbers,” he stated.
Erigga also lamented how social media drama now overshadows genuine musical efforts, arguing that influencers often divert public attention away from artists’ work.
“Back then, an artist’s competition used to be his fellow musicians. But now, you can drop a hot track, and next thing—GehGeh and VeryDarkMan start fighting, and the public’s attention shifts from your song to their saga,” he said.
