FAAN Breaks Silence on Kwam 1 vs ValueJet Pilots at Abuja Airport
FAAN Clarifies Abuja Airport Incident Involving Fuji Star K1 De Ultimate and ValueJet Pilots
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a statement addressing the recent incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, involving renowned Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (popularly known as K1 De Ultimate), and two pilots from domestic airline ValueJet.
The controversy came to light after the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) announced the suspension of the pilots on Tuesday night over what it described as a “serious breach” of aviation safety protocols. A 23-second video posted on NCAA’s official X (formerly Twitter) account showed a CRJ-900ER aircraft, with registration 5N-BXS, taxiing at high speed while ground personnel were still in close proximity—some visibly scrambling to avoid the moving jet.
FAAN, in a statement on Wednesday, shed more light on the situation. According to the agency, the passenger involved—identified as the music icon K1 De Ultimate—was scheduled to fly from Abuja to Lagos on ValueJet Flight VK 201.
During the boarding process, FAAN said the passenger attempted to carry an unidentified liquid onto the aircraft. Despite being cautioned by Aviation Security (AVSEC) officers and the flight captain, he allegedly refused to comply with standard international aviation regulations, which prohibit passengers from bringing liquids exceeding 100ml onboard, unless medically necessary and properly declared under Nigeria’s National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP) and ICAO Annex 17.
An airline security officer reportedly requested the musician step aside for further screening, but he allegedly resisted and proceeded to pour the contents of the container—later identified as alcohol—on the officer.
FAAN noted that the Flight Captain attempted to defuse the situation but faced similar defiance. Once boarding was completed, she ordered the aircraft door closed. The passenger then reportedly moved to the aircraft’s front area, refusing to leave despite several requests, prompting AVSEC’s crime unit to escort him away for questioning. He was later released.
FAAN emphasized its zero-tolerance policy for behavior that compromises aviation safety, regardless of status or identity.
“The safety and security of passengers, crew, and airport staff is our top priority. This incident remains under full investigation, and anyone found culpable will face appropriate legal consequences,” the agency stated.
