Hilda Baci Explains Her 200-Bag Rice Feast

Guinness World Record holder and celebrity chef Hilda Baci has clarified why she reduced her target from 250 bags of rice to 200 bags in her ongoing attempt to set a new record for the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice.

Speaking at Eko Hotels, Lagos, the Akwa Ibom-born chef said the adjustment was necessary due to technical and safety concerns linked to the weighing process.

“When we began, we had to weigh the pot and every single ingredient that would go in. The standard crane and scale available can only carry 20,000 kilograms. It is safer to go below that limit so the scale can carry it all at once,” Baci explained.

She noted that the custom-built six-metre-wide pot, along with its contents, risked exceeding the weight limit of the measuring equipment.

Despite scaling down, Baci emphasized the significance of the achievement.
“Even at 200 bags, we are still making history. This is 4,000kg of rice that will feed 20,000 people comfortably. So we’re still up there,” she assured.

The record attempt has drawn thousands of spectators, entertainers, and dignitaries, turning the event into a festival-like celebration with music, dancing, and celebrity appearances.

Baci described the project as the biggest undertaking of her career, saying it took nearly a year of planning, including nine months of preparation, two months to fabricate the massive pot, and nine hours of continuous cooking.

In a gesture of encouragement, the Guinness World Records team in London sent her a message on social media wishing her success.
