Hilda Baci’s Guinness Jollof Attempt Hit by Pot Collapse

Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda Baci’s attempt to set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the largest pot of jollof rice took an unexpected turn on Friday night when her massive cooking pot collapsed during weighing.

The incident occurred at Eko Hotels, Lagos, where Baci had cooked over 200 bags of rice in a specially designed 22,619-litre steel pot. To validate the record, the pot and its contents needed to be weighed by crane.

However, midway into the lift, the pot gave way under its own weight, forcing operators to halt the process to prevent further damage.

The mishap has now raised uncertainty over the official Guinness certification, as accurate measurement of the pot is crucial to the record attempt.

Baci had earlier revealed plans to cook 250 bags of rice, but later adjusted to 200 bags to remain within the technical limits of the weighing equipment.

  • @khykheloormuur questioned the pot design: “Didn’t the engineers put into consideration that 200 bags of rice will weigh more than 10 tonnes?”
  • @NOJEEET added: “Won’t Guinness disqualify this? I hope they don’t.”

Despite the setback, supporters praised Baci’s courage, noting that her attempt still showcased Nigeria’s culinary excellence on the global stage.
