I’m not the Afrobeats Queen – Tiwa Savage

Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has expressed discomfort with being labeled the “Queen of Afrobeats,” insisting that many other female artists equally deserve the crown.

In a recent chat with Apple Music’s Ebro, Tiwa explained that while she values the love from fans, she does not fully embrace the title because it carries weighty responsibilities.

“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are queens,” she said.

Tiwa further noted that the tag feels “uncomfortable” for her. “If I start accepting it, then I have to carry it with so much humility, and honestly, it doesn’t even make sense to me. So, I don’t [accept it]. But I appreciate it,” she explained.

According to the singer, the title likely comes from the fact that she was one of the first Nigerian women to break into the global Afrobeats scene. “I think it’s just because I was among the first female artists in Nigeria to breakthrough. I do appreciate that, and I’m not taking it for granted,” Tiwa added.
