Lagos Govt Backs Its Action Against Actress Sarah Martins
The Lagos State Government has responded to allegations by Nollywood actress Sarah Martins, who claimed she was assaulted by officers of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) during a community outreach exercise in Lagos.
Martins had earlier taken to Instagram to accuse the officers of harassment and assault while she was cooking outdoors to provide free meals for the homeless.
In a statement on Friday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, defended the actions of KAI operatives, explaining that the actress’s activity violated state environmental and sanitation regulations.
“The individual in question claimed to be conducting charitable cooking activities on the road median, which unfortunately contravened existing environmental and sanitation regulations,” Wahab stated.
He stressed that while the government appreciates charitable and community support initiatives, such activities must comply with Lagos State laws to ensure public safety and maintain urban order.
“The Lagos State Government deeply appreciates the spirit of philanthropy and community support demonstrated by many residents, but such initiatives must be carried out in compliance with the state’s extant laws to ensure public safety, environmental protection, and urban order,” he added.
The commissioner explained that the enforcement action was necessary to prevent safety hazards and traffic disruptions, and urged residents to obtain proper authorization before embarking on similar public activities.
“Lagosians are encouraged to use designated spaces or seek necessary approvals for such activities so they can contribute positively without compromising the state’s standards,” Wahab noted.
