Lasmid Claims Ghana Shaped Nigerian Hit Songs

Ghanaian singer Ladsmid Nathaniel Owusu, popularly known as Lasmid, has stirred up conversation after claiming that Ghana has played a major role in shaping the Nigerian music industry.

The Bad Boy hitmaker argued that many Nigerian songs only became popular after gaining traction in Ghana, suggesting that Ghanaian audiences often embrace Afrobeats hits before Nigerians do.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, Lasmid stated that Ghanaian fans have consistently shown immense love for Nigerian artists, sometimes even more than for their own local musicians.

“We love Nigerians so much — sometimes more than we love ourselves,” he said. “When a Nigerian artist releases a new song, it often blows up in Ghana first before it becomes a hit in Nigeria. Many big Nigerian tracks found success in Ghana before catching on back home.”

He cited Spyro’s viral single “Who’s Your Guy” as an example, claiming it became a major hit in Ghana before dominating Nigerian airwaves. “That song was already huge in Ghana before Nigerians picked up on it. The love we have for Nigeria has always been strong,” Lasmid added.

His comments have reignited the long-running Ghana vs. Naija debate on social media, with fans from both countries weighing in on which nation has had a greater influence on Afrobeats culture.

It will be recalled that a similar controversy erupted a few years ago when Nigerian singer Mr Eazi claimed that Ghanaian sounds had influenced the Nigerian music scene. His statement at the time sparked backlash from Nigerian fans, who accused him of undermining his home industry.
