Stars Mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence in Style

Prominent Nigerian entertainers, including Funke Akindele, Regina Daniels, Tonto Dikeh, DJ Cuppy, and veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), joined millions of citizens to celebrate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1.

October 1 is observed annually as a public holiday in Nigeria to mark the country’s independence from British colonial rule in 1960.

Taking to social media, actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele described Nigeria as her pride, urging citizens to remain hopeful and prayerful for national growth.

“Happy 65th Independence Day, Nigeria! My country, my pride! Despite our diversity, let’s continue to preach love, believe in ourselves, and pray for our nation’s growth. May we keep rising above challenges and shine brighter with each passing day. Let’s keep Nigeria in our prayers and in our hearts,” she wrote.

Regina Daniels shared a video of herself singing the national anthem, asking, “Can someone tell me what changed? Abi everything is still the same?”

Actress Eniola Badmus, in a video taken at the Nigerian embassy in the US, reflected on national identity. “As we mark Nigeria’s Independence Day, I am reminded of the profound truth that whether at home or abroad, the spirit of Nigeria remains ever present within us,” she said.

Tonto Dikeh encouraged collective effort toward national development. “Let’s keep building, believing and becoming together. A brighter Nigeria isn’t a dream, it is a future we are creating step by step,” she wrote.

May Edochie celebrated Nigeria’s cultural heritage, writing: “From our rich culture to our boundless dreams. Let’s make Nigeria more than a country but a home.”

Veteran actor RMD expressed his enduring love for the nation, stating, “I love Nigeria, and this no be lie. For better for worse, na so e be.”

DJ Cuppy also shared her patriotic sentiment, declaring that she would still choose to be Nigerian in her next life.
