Tiwa Savage Admits She Once Struggled with Being African
Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage has dismissed claims that Afrobeats is currently experiencing its worst decline in two decades, insisting that the genre remains one of the fastest-growing in the world.
Her remarks come after industry figures such as Paul Okoye (Paulo) and DJ Big N suggested in separate interviews and social media posts that Afrobeats’ global dominance is fading.
Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, Savage countered those claims, asserting that Afrobeats continues to break barriers on global charts and stages.
“Afrobeats is the fastest growing genre in the world. We kind of created it with nothing — no support, no infrastructure, no real belief even from our own people initially,” she said.
The award-winning singer also reflected on her personal journey, revealing how Afrobeats has reshaped the global perception of Africa and helped her embrace her cultural identity.
“I remember growing up in London and I was not happy being African. But now I’m so proud because of how big Afrobeats is growing.
There was a conversation at one point that Afrobeats would have its 15 minutes of fame and then fade away. But we are still here — filling out stadiums and topping charts.”
Savage further emphasized that Afrobeats’ global influence goes beyond music, symbolizing resilience and pride in African identity.

“As much as they are trying to quiet us down, the music is not going anywhere. We are Africans — and we are unstoppable,” she declared.
