Tope Alabi Breaks Silence on Alleged First Marriage [VIDEO]
Famous Nigerian gospel singer Tope Alabi has addressed the lingering controversy surrounding her alleged marriage to Lekan Olaoye, the father of her first child.
DAILY POST reports that Tope Alabi was previously in a relationship with Olaoye, and the union produced a daughter, Ayomikun. After their separation, she went on to marry Soji Alabi in November 2000, and their marriage has been blessed with two children.
A few months ago, the singer came under criticism on social media for not inviting Olaoye to their daughter’s wedding and for changing Ayomikun’s surname to that of her current husband.
Speaking in a recent Facebook video, Tope Alabi clarified that her relationship with Olaoye was never formalized, as he never introduced his family to hers or performed any traditional marriage rites.
She recounted:

“I started living with him, feeling there was no point going back to where my family was pressuring me to marry at all costs. Little did I know I had moved from the frying pan to the fire. Whenever I visited home, my father would express his concern.
“He hadn’t met the man I was living with nor any of his family members. It took repeated insistence before my so-called partner finally came one night, bringing along work friends.
“My family asked when his family would come for the introduction, and all he said was ‘Okay.’ If that ‘okay’ was ever going to come to pass, perhaps it would have been tomorrow. But tomorrow never came. Now, I don’t even need his ‘okay’ anymore.”
She added that her late father eventually found peace when she married into a family that properly fulfilled marital traditions.
“Ladies, please listen to me. When a man sees that you are gullible or vulnerable, he can take advantage of you,” she warned.
