Tyla Stirs Buzz: No Regrets Despite Tiwa Savage’s Apology

Grammy-winning South African star Tyla has distanced herself from Tiwa Savage’s public apology to Black Americans over her self-identification as “coloured.”

Tyla came under fire after describing herself with the term, which is commonly used in South Africa to refer to people of mixed heritage but considered offensive in the United States due to its racist history.

During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, Tiwa Savage, introducing herself as Tyla’s “elder,” apologized to the African-American community on the singer’s behalf. The move, however, provoked a backlash from South Africans, who criticized Savage for speaking on a cultural issue she “does not fully understand.”

Tyla appeared to subtly push back during her performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York, where she declared:

The moment has since gone viral, with many South Africans praising Tyla for standing her ground on her racial identity and rejecting an apology she did not issue.
