VDM calls out hypocrisy in Phyna’s sister tragedy

Nigerian social critic and activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly called Verydarkman (VDM), has spoken out following the death of Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of reality TV star, Phyna. Ruth, who had been fighting for her life after a devastating accident, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

Reports indicate that Ruth was struck by a Dangote truck allegedly driven by an unlicensed driver in Auchi, Edo State. She remained hospitalized for 19 days before succumbing to her injuries.

Reacting in a video shared on Instagram, VDM lashed out at Nigerians, bloggers, and government bodies for staying silent while Ruth was still alive, only to flood social media with tributes after her death.

“She spent 19 days in the hospital, yet nobody said a word. Now that she’s gone, everyone suddenly wants to post and trend the story. If we had spoken earlier, maybe the Dangote Group would have been forced to act,” he stated.

The activist argued that timely public pressure could have compelled the Dangote Group to respond more responsibly. He also faulted the company for allegedly employing unlicensed drivers and condemned the government for failing to enforce safety regulations.

According to him, Ruth’s death is yet another painful reminder of how ordinary citizens are failed by both powerful corporations and government institutions.
