Women struggle in Nigerian music scene – Qing Madi
Fast-rising Nigerian singer Qing Madi has spoken out about the challenges faced by women in the country’s music industry, describing it as an environment that is far from supportive of female artists.
The “American Love” crooner said the industry offers little protection for women, adding that female musicians often receive less recognition and are judged more harshly than their male counterparts.
Speaking on the Wahala Podcast, Qing Madi stressed that women are expected to put in twice the effort to achieve the same success as men.
“The industry isn’t the best for women when it comes to protection and appreciation. Women are constantly boxed in. They get criticized for almost nothing, while men can do whatever they like without the same backlash,” she explained.

At just 19, the singer admitted she has already experienced such double standards. “I go through that, which is crazy because I’m only 19. Women never get a break. That’s why I’m proud to be a female artist in Nigeria, and I respect every woman doing music here. It’s not easy—it takes a lot.”
